H E Dr Futaisi also spoke of the change in taxi fares. “Starting June 2019, all taxis in Muscat will have meters with a base fare of 300bz and thereon it will be 130bz per km. It will start from Muscat and then it will be implemented in other governorates.” Giving more details on the fare system, Eng Ahmed bin Sulaiman al Yaribi, director of Land Transport in the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) said, “Every taxi driver will have to get an operations card worth RO15 from the ministry.
We have about 36,000 orange taxis in Oman and 20,000 in Muscat.” H E Eng Salim bin Mohammed al Nuaimi, Undersecretary in MoTC who was also present at the event, said that the new law will be implemented across several stages.
“The Land Transport Law regulation will be carried out across several stages such as creating an electronic platform, construction of weighing stations for trucks and management and operation of taxi fare for the orange taxis. We will implement these projects in partnership with the private sector.”
The ministry will also get six fixed stations for weighing trucks on Batinah Expressway. The project will be built by the end of 2018. Each station will be spread over 1,000sq m.
