Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) and ADQ, one of the region’s largest holding companies, said on Tuesday that Japan’s Mitsui & Co. and South Korea’s GS Energy Corporation have agreed to partner with its joint venture, TA’ZIZ, and Fertiglobe to develop the low-carbon blue ammonia facility in the UAE.
ADNOC is developing a blue ammonia production facility at the Ta’ziz Industrial Chemicals Zone in Ruwais with a potential capacity of 1,000 kilotonnes per year.
ADNOC and Fertiglobe, a joint venture between Dutch chemical producer OCI and the state energy company, recently sold low-carbon blue ammonia demonstration cargos to customers in Japan and Korea.
Blue ammonia is a low-carbon method of producing the compound and, besides fertilizer, has uses in power industrial heating, heavy road transport and shipping. ADNOC signed an agreement in July with three Japanese companies to explore the commercial production of blue ammonia in the UAE.
The partnerships with Mitsui and GS Energy are expected to capitalize on the growing demand for blue ammonia.
Mitsui & Co. is a major global developer of energy and resources projects based in Japan, while GS Energy is a leading energy solutions company based in Korea. The agreements with both companies are subject to relevant regulatory and company approvals, ADNOC said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
