Dubai: Abu Dhabi International saw a 4.8 per cent increase in passengers in April, operator Abu Dhabi Airports said on Wednesday.
The airport, home to Etihad Airways, saw 1.96 million passengers in April compared to 1.87 million a year earlier, according to a company statement.
April’s figures bring year-to-date passenger numbers at Abu Dhabi International to 8 million, up 8.3 per cent.
In April, the airport saw 14,074 aircraft landings and take-offs, down 1 per cent, while cargo handled fell 6.2 per cent to 63,500 tonnes. Year-to-date cargo volumes are down 4.8 per cent to 254,907 tonnes.
The top five routes in April were London Heathrow, Doha, Bangkok, Bombay and Jeddah, whilst the United Kingdom and Australia recorded a 25.6 per cent and 20.6 per cent increase in passenger traffic when compared to April 2015.
“Abu Dhabi is growing, both as a global tourism destination and strategic transit hub and this is clear from the fact that we are still seeing a year on year increase in traveller numbers at AUH. Several destinations in particular have seen a rise in passenger traffic including India, Germany, Thailand, the UK and Italy,” stated Mohammad Al Katheeri, Acting Chief Operations Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports.
