Abu Dhabi: The installed capacity of Al Mirfa power production and water desalination plant development project will reach 1500 Mega Watt (mw) of electricity and 53 million gallon of water daily (mgd), said Abdullah Saif Al Nuaimi, director general of the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority.
“The development process of the new plant will insure observance of environmental requirements and reduction of production costs,” said Al Nuaimi.
“The project includes a combined cycle power plant with 1000 to 1100 (mw) capacity, four gas turbines of 400 (mw) and 30 mgd desalination unit,” he added.
Al Nuaimi highlighted: “The project is targeted to satisfy the increasing demand for electricity, which is increasing annually by 11 per and to meet the development requirements of the Northern Emirates.”
He added that ADWEA had exported 2000 (mw) of electricity during 2011 and this figure is slated to increase to 3900 (mw) by 2015 on annual basis.
“The project emerges within the frame of the plans of Abu Dhabi Government to provide energy sources covering future demand for electricity and water to provide good living conditions for nationals and to achieve social welfare and prosperity,” clarified Al Nuaimi.
On June 13, 2012, the Executive Council reviewed the Al Mirfa power production and water desalination plant development project which is part of the country’s plans to ensure that the growing demands for power and water are met.
Al Nuaimi explained that the proposed site of Mirfa is the last power and desalination plant to be privatized as it represents the ideal solution to meet any expected shortage promptly.
Mohammad Amerah, an economist at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told the Gulf News: “The project will achieve high fuel efficiency and reduces production and overhead costs.”
“This Mirfa site and project were carefully selected. For example, ADNOC nowadays is building a Nitrogen gas plant there and this plant will require about 200 (mw) of power,” added Amerah.
