Tekla Middle East BIM Awards held in conjunction with Tekla Users Day, annually, boasts the best use of Tekla Structures in 3 significant categories; BIM, Concrete and Steel. Tekla ME BIM Awards received many entries from across the region including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Qatar, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain. All entries are reviewed by a jury of BIM experts and they take into account the extensive use of Tekla Structures and consider the public voting results. The winners are then automatically entered into the Tekla Global BIM Awards, competing against models from around the world.
The winner of the best BIM category went to Besix for their work on the international football stadium, the center piece of King Abdulla Sport City, the best steel crown went to Eversendai for Masdar headquarters and finally the concrete award was won by PGESCo for Baiji Simple Cycle Power Plant in Iraq.
Because of the complete and intricate use of BIM on the 60,000 seat international football stadium, this model stood out from the rest. Other areas like the 45,000 open asphalted car parking spaces, 8 kilometers of asphalted road works, 2 kilometers of pedestrian walkways, swales, culverts, substations and power, and water and sewage utilities also benefitted from the use of BIM.
Other aspects of Besix's work included, a 500 person mosque, complete with an outdoor prayer area with a capacity of 1,000 worshippers, and a central plaza incorporating the royal ceremonial and VVIP access road to the soccer stadium.This entire project required all engineering material procurement, construction fit out and furnishing, along with pre-commissioning and mechanical completion & commissioning.Eversendai's incredible work on the Masdar headquarters won the best steel category award.
Masdar Headquarters, a 7 storey structural steel frame braced superstructure with a floor to floor height typically 4.2 meters with the exception of the ground level which stretches to 5.6 meters.
Tekla BIM played an integral role in shaping this engineering marvel. The floor is a metal deck reinforced concrete composite structural steel beam system. The composite secondary steel beams are supported by primary steel beams which in turn are supported off structural steel columns. The columns are founded on reinforced concrete ground beams which bear on the piled suspended slab foundations.
The best concrete award went to PGESCo for their expertise in getting the Baiji Simple Cycle Power Plant off the ground in Iraq and consists of 3 modules each consisting of 2 x 160 MW gas combustion units. The power plant is a reinforced concrete and steel structure of buildings in addition to the storm drainage system as well as road and gantry tower all included in the same model.
In order to accommodate the PGESCo drawing standards, the team was required to develop specific drawing settings, automatic macros, attributes as well as templates. Using CIS/2 exchange method, all concrete and steel models are imported in SmartPlant 3D to coordinate with architectural, mechanical and electrical models. In corporation with this, the team also succeeded in reducing the time and increased the accuracy which in turn improved the overall performance of the production process.
