SHARJAH: The fifth edition of Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial (Universe) 2012 was opened by H. H. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah at the At the Calligraphy Square in Sharjah.
In attendance at the opening ceremony were H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, crown prince and deputy ruler of Sharjah, sheikhs, senior officials and a host of art enthusiasts. Organized by Sharjah's Directorate of Arts from 1 April to 1 May, the biennial exhibition is not only for Islamic calligraphy. Internationally renowned calligraphers from around the world representing different cultures were invited to showcase their works in the current edition of the event which is being held under the theme "Universe". More than 1000 works by 160 artists from the UAE, Arab, Muslim and other countries will be showcased at the event. Later, Sheikh Sultan honored winners of this edition's competitions. The winning calligraphers are from Turkey, Egypt and Iraq. Other participants in the exhibition's activities from the UAE, Oman, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Kuwait, were also honored by Sheikh Sultan.Copyright Emirates News Agency (WAM) 2012.
