Doha:  Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has recently opened a specialty unit providing care and surgical needs to all patients with thyroid gland disorders.

According to Dr. Abdulla Al Ansari, Deputy Chief of Medical Academic and Research Affairs for Surgical Services at HMC and Dr. Sabah Adnan Al Qadhi, Senior Consultant of Urology and Vice Chairman of Surgery Department, the opening the thyroid clinic was in response to the increasing demand for this type of medical care in Qatar. "Cases of thyroid infections including benign and malignant thyroid tumors, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism have been on the rise in Qatar in the last few years so it is important to have a specialized clinic devoted to these disorders."

"A multidisciplinary team comprising of general surgeons, ear, nose and throat surgeons, neck and maxillofacial surgeons, endocrinologists, nuclear medicine specialists, radiologists and pathologists, is working closely to provide the best care at the clinic," Dr. Al Ansari noted.

Dr. Mohammed Salem Al-Hassan, Consultant of Endocrinology and head of the new unit, stated that the unit, located in the Outpatient Department at Hamad General Hospital (HGH), operates from Sunday to Thursday, adding that it receives about 60 cases per month.

Dr. Al-Hassan mentioned that in order to accelerate the diagnosis and therapeutic process of thyroid gland disorders, another unit dedicated to collecting and investigating thyroidal samples will be established within the coming few weeks. The new unit will be supervised by a team of endocrinologists.

He added that in compliance with Qatar's National Cancer Strategy, suspected cases of thyroid malignancies will be seen by a cancer specialist within 48 hours of referral.
