AMMAN -- Jordan lags behind several countries in the region in terms of Internet download and upload speeds, according to an international report.
The average download speed is 3.09 megabits per second (Mbps) in Jordan, ranking 159th on the Net Index's household download list and 147th on the upload sub-index.
The Net Index was released recently by Ookla, the international company that offers Speedtest.net, a service for testing Internet connection bandwidth to locations around the world.
"The index is based on millions of recent test results from Speedtest.net," according to its website. It compares and ranks consumer download speeds around the globe.
Upload speed in Jordan reached 1.44Mbps, according to the report, which indicated that tests from 307,295 unique IPs have been taken in the Kingdom and of a total of 2,504,928 tests, 100,016 were used for the current index.
In terms of upload speed, Jordan ranked 147th globally, according to the index.
The results were obtained by analysing test data between November 5, 2013 and December 4, 2013.
Jordan was preceded by several Arab countries, according to the index.
The UAE topped Arab states in terms of Internet download and upload speeds, where it registered a download speed of 15.42Mbps, taking 46th place, and an upload speed of 7.98Mbps, coming 33rd.
Saudi Arabia came second among Arab countries, with a 10Mbps download speed and a 2.4Mbps upload, followed by Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Morocco, Iraq and Libya, which all had faster download and upload speeds than Jordan, according to the index.
The top five positions on the household download index were taken by Hong Kong (70.11Mbps), Singapore (54Mbps), Romania (53. 79Mbps), South Korea (48.07Mbps) and Sweden (42.76Mbps).
The global average is 16.26Mbps.Hong Kong also led the upload sub-index at 57.87Mbps, followed by South Korea (41.07Mbps), Singapore (38.67Mbps), Andorra (37.80Mbps) and Macau (37.36Mbps).
The global average is 7.14Mbps.
