Managing director of Sarv Oil and Gas Development Company said Iran has mastered the GTL (gas to liquids) technology that enables the country to produce Euro-5 or higher quality gasoline.
Amir Houman Karimi also told IRNA that the project has completed its pilot (semi-industrial) phase and can start its production line.
The official noted that because of the low amount of sulfur, the quality of gasoline is better than Euro-5 gasoline.
"Given the economical reasons, the technology can be used in refineries with the processing capacity of over 4,500 barrels per day," he said.
GTL is a refinery process to convert natural gas or other gaseous hydrocarbons into longer-chain hydrocarbons such as gasoline or diesel.
Methane-rich gases are converted into liquid synthetic fuels either via direct conversion using the new non-catalytic gas-to-liquids process that converts methane to methanol in one step.
