Muscat: With the globalisation of women's issues, the year 2013 is promising great strides to be taken in the area of issuing women roles in decision making processes, encouraging women to take up business leadership roles, reducing rampant practices of violence against women and furthering education for women. Focus will also be geared towards tackling issues of women in developing and under-developed regions around the globe.
Taking place at the Grand Hyatt Muscat from 24th -25th June 2013, the 1st Oman Extraordinary Women Conference 2013 will see extraordinary women from different walks on life focus on the role of working women in the corporate world touching upon aspects like entrepreneurship and achievements in different industrial positions.
Hon. Naashiah Al Kharusi, Chairperson, Omani Women Association & Member, State Council of Sultanate of Oman will provide opening remarks and introduce the audience to the Conference under the role of Conference Chairperson.
Following her Dr. Kiran Bedi, Former Indian Police Service (I.P.S) Distinguished Officer & India's First and Highest (Woman) Ranking Officer will deliver the keynote presentation on the past, present and future role of women, where she will examine current difficulties being faced by women today, the need for women to break traditional mindsets by stepping out of their comfort zones and the steps they need to take towards progress.
In developing a global information society, the role of IT as a tool of women empowerment can be used to bring about economic status upliftment of women and a system of social change and justice. While the use of IT tools is gaining ground for corporate and social purposes, a small percent of Arab women consider it to be their profession. In this regard Ms. Sherifa Hady, EG Distribution Manager - Middle East , Mediterranean & Africa, Hewlett-Packard will analyse Arab women in the world of IT and HP.
In an exceptionally male dominated society, the concept of women entrepreneurship, particularly in the Middle East, deserves attention because although women are gradually carving a niche for themselves through entrepreneurial pursuits, they require to be taught entrepreneurial thinking as a means of financial emancipation. From this point of view, Ms. Sherry Colbourne, President, Social Mogul Marketing will guide women on how to create a culture of entrepreneurship among women in Oman.
During the last two decades, the number of women involved in the aviation industry has steadily increased and women can be found in nearly every aviation occupation today. Today the sky is the limit for women who can pursue careers as pilots, flight engineers, flight attendants, airline non-flying careers, airport careers and careers in aircraft manufacturing, aviation maintenance and avionics. Ms. Rimzie Ismail, Head of Customer Affairs & Service Initiatives Dubai Airports will elaborate on the rising role of women in airline industry from a GCC perspective.
Following her, a panel discussion will see Ms. Hady, Ms. Colbourne, Ms. Ismail and Ms. Kamal Khimji convene to discuss Global women achievements and present and future challenges tackling the current situation and developments from historic perspective, challenges and shared insights from cross industry leaders and the situation over the next 5 years
Ms. Laila Habib Abdullah Al-Hamdoon, Drama Director & writer will share her experience and journey of being a woman film maker in Oman, using the background of films and art as a change medium, where she will detail on the role of cinema in uplifting and empowering women, the vital role of arts in mentoring at the right level and cultivating entrepreneurship attitude and aesthetic appreciation. She will also showcase a special panorama made for the Conference.
Despite making strides in the workplace, women are often the victims of stress which can be have both short term and long term effects in the future. A minimal amount of stress is required to motivate one to achieve results at the workplace but chronic stress may lead to serious health problems. Ms. Kamal Khimji, International Faculty, Art of Living Foundation, Representative International Association of Human Values will cover stress management techniques that can be practiced by women while discussing the art of managing the stress , being a leader at work place and managing family roles joyfully.
Bringing the 1st Day of the Conference to an end, Ms. Amal Al Maashari & Ms. Layal Abdullah, Knowledge Oman will provide insight on the ways of empowering women's development through volunteer work covering the benefits, opportunities and scope for personal growth and brand positioning as a volunteer.
