Abu Dhabi: A man charged with planning indiscriminate attacks in places visited by foreigners will have his fate determined at a court ruling on October 24.

The Arab man, A.A.H., is accused of planting explosives in tourist places across the UAE, frequently visited by foreigners, the prosecutors told the Federal Supreme Court.

A prosecutor added the man also set up and ran social media accounts to promote the ideology of Daesh.

The defendant’s lawyer demanded that his client be cleared of all charges based on a medical report of his physical and mental health.

The court, presided over by judge Mohammad Jarrah Al Tunaiji, adjourned the hearing to October 24, when a ruling will be issued.

In another case, an Emirati, K.A.B., 21, charged with travelling to Syria via Turkey and joining Daesh, had his hearing adjourned to October 17, for the lawyer to prepare his defence.

The defendant is also accused of buying weapons and training with terrorists of Daesh, with knowledge of the terrorist group’s purposes.

In a third case, a man from an Asian country, S.S.G.M., 35, who worked for a UAE port, was charged with passing on classified information about vessels calling at the port to the intelligence service of a foreign country.

The defendant denied the accusations and his lawyer demanded that defence witnesses testify before the court.

The hearing was adjourned to October 17 to allow the lawyer to prepare his defence.

In a fourth case, a man from an Asian country, A.A.G., 22, who worked for a telecom company, admitted he logged into the company’s network and obtained classified information about Emirati officials, which he later passed on to an official at the consulate of a foreign country.

The man told the court he did not know the information was classified and that the official was just a friend of his. The court adjourned the hearing to October 17 to allow the lawyer to prepare his defence.

A man from an Asian country, A.A.H., 25, charged with transferring money to a member of an Al Qaida terrorist group in his country, had his hearing adjourned to October 24, when a ruling will be issued.

The lawyer demanded that his client be cleared of charges as he had given the money to a man who planned to get married to his sister. The defendant, the lawyer told the court, did not know of the man’s connections with any terrorist organisations.

The hearing was adjourned to October 24, when a ruling will be given.

An Arab man, S.S.A.M., 32, charged with joining Al Islah terrorist group, an offshoot of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, also outlawed and branded as terrorist in both countries, had his hearing adjourned to October 17 to allow the lawyer to cross-examine a prosecutor witness.
