DOHA: Qatar yesterday signed an agreement with Turkish company Tekfen for construction of QR7.6bn highway as part of Al Khor Expressway project.

The deal was signed in Ankara by Minister of Municipality and Environment

H E Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi; Turkish Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ahmet Arslan; and a senior official of Tekfen Holding Construction. Qatari Ambassador to Turkey Salem Mubarak Al Shafi was present.

The highway will span 34km, include 12 bridges and crossings and will link Doha with Lusail, Al Khor and the new stadiums. It will consist five lanes in each direction and is to be completed in 30 months, the ministry said in a statement yesterday. It will also include eight intersections and pedestrian, bicycle and motorcycle lanes.

Tekfen, a conglomerate based in Istanbul, has subsidiaries engaged in a diverse range of construction activities including power generation, airports, petroleum, roadways, infrastructure projects, building complexes. Tekfen primarily operates in Turkey, the Middle East, the Caspian region and North Africa.

Arslan said that the number of projects undertaken by Turkish contractors in Qatar reached 119 amounting to a $15 bn value, Turkish news agency Anatolia reported yesterday.

The trading volume between Turkey and Qatar almost tripled to reach $1.3 billion in the last five years, Arslan said, underlining the complementary roles of both economies.

"The Al Khor Expressway project will be a great example of collaboration between Qatar and Turkey in the field of construction. Qatar is going to host the FIFA 2022 World Cup and introduce great projects through its 2030 National Vision. Turkish contractors have immense knowledge, experience, workforce in order to accomplish these projects," Arslan added.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim yesterday received Al Rumaihi and discussed ways to further enhance cooperation between the two countries.
