MUSCAT: According to a survey conducted by the National Centre for Statistics and Information, 69 per cent of the Sultanate’s population (both nationals and expatriates) use private cars, 17 per cent use the public transport and 9 per cent use buses provided by employers. The survey found that 94 per cent of Omanis use private cars. Forty-nine per cent of expatriate population use private cars. The percentage of expatriates who use the public transport stands at 27 per cent against 4 per cent among nationals.

Three out of five respondents (approximately 62 per cent) said they take the road mainly to go to office, other respondents cited different reasons such as shopping (13 per cent) and family visits (12 per cent). Eighty-five per cent expatriates usually use private cars to go to office against 41 per cent Omanis. Twenty-one per cent nationals use private cars to visit friends and relatives. Eighty per cent of male population use their own vehicle for work and 7 per cent for shopping, while 27 per cent of females use their personal cars mainly for shopping, 26 per cent use cars for friends and family visits and 25 per cent for office.

Regarding the index of satisfaction with transport infrastructure quality, 80 per cent of those polled said they are ‘very satisfied’, while 77 per cent said they are satisfied with the periodic maintenance of roads and 71 per cent expressed satisfaction with the commitment to implement the road projects within schedule. Generally, 90 per cent of expatriates expressed satisfaction with the quality of road infrastructure compared to 73 per cent among nationals.
