AMMAN (Petra) - HRH Princess Basma on Monday inaugurated the studios of the broadcast media training unit (MTS) of the Arab Media Women Centre (AMWC) which specialises in producing programmes tackling women's and youth issues.
On the occasion, the Princess hailed the AMWC initiative; in the centre's visitor's book, she said: "The project translates the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah to set the basis of a modern and advanced media whose goal is to serve and tackle the nation's issues and provide new media talent to enrich and boost the Kingdom's advancement."
In an address at the opening ceremony, Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications Nasser Judeh, who accompanied the Princess on the visit, underlined the importance of the centre and its role in bringing about change, development and modernisation in the field of media.
The Princess toured the centre, which will provide training to new media graduates and refresher courses to veteran media people.
Judeh seized the occasion to urge the media to be transparent and act as a watchful eye to detect the truth and assist the government in its efforts to rectify wrong practices.
He also called on the media to refrain from character assassination and not to be biased, stressing the need to find how real a piece of news is before spreading it.
"Unfortunately, we have recently noticed that the media have distanced themselves from their great and deep-seated tradition, by resorting to character assassination, and have distanced themselves from in-depth investigations," said Judeh.
Underlining the large number of media outlets in the Kingdom, Judeh urged them to abide by the profession's ethics and to support the state and the government in unveiling wrongdoing, in order to have them addressed and rectified.
The training studios will make use of Jordanian and Arab expertise to qualify young media people, AMWC President Mahasen Imam said yesterday.
Imam expressed gratitude for Princess Basma's continuous support and to Planning and International Cooperation Minister Suhair Al-Ali for sponsoring the training centre.
The AMWC was established in 1999 under the directives of Princess Basma to empower Arab women journalists.
