Caledonian College, IFEED ink MoU on renewable energy research |

MUSCAT -- The Caledonian College of Engineering, Oman (CCE)Caledonian College of Engineering, Oman (CCE)
yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the German-based International Research Centre for Renewable Energy (IFEED) to explore co-operation in the renewables in the Sultanate. The deal was inked by Dr P Mohamed Ali, Chairman of Board of Directors of CCECCE
, with Dr Nasser el Bassam, Director of IFEED. Also present were Maria Schlichting, IFEED's Secretary of International Affairs, Prof Frank McIntosh, Principal and Dean of CCECCE
, and Caledonian executive Nizamuddin Ahmed and Dr K P Ramachandran.Speaking at a press briefing here yesterday, Dr Mohamed Ali said the arrangement between CCECCE
and IFEED will promote a qualitative improvement in technological education, industry and commerce in Oman and the region. "The research in renewable energy resources is vital for sustained development, keeping in view the availability of natural energy sources. has been contributing to social, economic and industrial development in Oman for over ten years through high quality technical education.As a young and vibrant participant in the higher education sector in Oman, CCECCE
recognises the role and importance of research as being one of the key elements for creating knowledge, and imparting dynamism to the educational process. CCECCE
is also getting involved in research collaboration and projects. Founded in 1999, IFEED promotes the use of renewable energy -- solar, wind and energy from biomass -- and the implementation of new projects in this field. The Centre is participating in a number of research studies, including renewable energy resources, demand study of electricity and water, electricity networking, and so on.Prof El Bassam said: "IFEED is working closely with different international institutions and organisations. This cooperation between Caledonian and IFEED envisages developing long-term strategies and concepts for power, water and food supply under different environments." The initial locus of cooperation will be in research and development, with the faculty and students from Oman having the opportunity of working together with different national and international bodies.
Further, emphasis will be given to cooperation and exchange of expertise in the design, development and delivery of educational short courses and training programmes to meet the needs of human resource development in Oman and the region. CCECCE
and IFEED will jointly identify the present and future needs of local industry specifically in the field of energy and the environment.By A Staff Reporter
